Prayers

Lord, teach us to pray

The best kind of prayers are those drawn from Scripture. We always want to pray within God' will. What better way to please God than to pray His Word back to Him. These lists have been compiled from throughout the Bible. They are arranged in three categories: Benedictions, Warfare, and Psalms. Benedictions are literally "good sayings" we can pray for others. I am defining "warfare" prayers as things we might pray against and not always for something. God is our strength and shield: this is warfare imagery, and I believe God expects us to take the fight to the enemy when He leads us there. Praying the Psalms is the most natural thing since many of them were originally written as prayers to God.

These prayers have been left essentially as they appear in the Scripture. Minor changes to make them directed prayers are included in [brackets].

Spiritual Warfare

These prayers take the battle imagery of Scripture and turn it into prayers. As an example, look at the first entry from James 4:7. Your prayer might sound something like this: "Lord, I am fully submitted to You. I stand against the devil and his schemes, and I expect him to get away from me." Another example is from number 4, taken from 1 Peter 5:8-9: "I am paying close attention to what is going on around me, Lord. I can see the devil approaching like a lion ready to gobble me up. But I am firm in my faith that he cannot harm me because I trust in You."

1. "Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 4:7

2. "You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world." 1 John 4:4

3. "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." 2 Cor. 10:3-5

4. "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith." 1 Pet. 5:8-9

5. "No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; and every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their vindication is from Me," declares the Lord." Is. 54:17

6. "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Eph. 6:11-17

Bonus prayer

A Seventeenth-Century Prayer by Joni Eareckson Tada

"Do not say, 'Why were the old days better than these?' For it is not wise to ask such questions. Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun. Wisdom is a shelter."

Ecclesiastes 7:10-12

My mother used to say, "Getting old ain't for sissies." She was right. I always thought it would be a cinch to grow old gracefully; then I crested 60 and found out differently! That's why the following prayer written by an anonymous saint from the seventeenth century means so much to me...

Lord, Thou knowest better than I know myself that I am growing older and will someday be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody. Helpful, but not bossy with my vast store of wisdom-- it seems a pity not to use it all, but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end...

Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point swiftly. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing, and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others' pains, but help me to endure them with patience. I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken.

Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a sour old person -- some of them are so hard to live with and each one a crowning work of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places, and talents in unexpected people. And, give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so. Amen.
